Title: Efecto de la suplementación con nitratos en el rendimiento deportivo de esfuerzos de carácter explosivo

Abstract: Nitrate supplementation has been shown to have ergogenic effects in endurance sports, especially at submaximal intensities where recruitment of type II muscle fibers predominates and there is a hypoxic environment. However, the evidence on its efficacy in explosive efforts, characterized by the expression of maximal power in a short period of time (<6 s), is limited. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effect of NO3 - supplementation in this type of efforts, as well as to discern the possible physiological mechanisms involved in its efficacy. The databases used to search for studies were PubMed, Scopus and Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and the following search strategy was used: (nitrate OR nitrite OR beetroot) AND (supplement OR supplementation) AND (strength OR power OR running OR cycling OR rowing OR "resistance training" OR "resistance exercise" OR athlete). After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 studies were selected, with a total of 160 participants. The results indicated that NO3 - supplementation appeared to be effective in improving total work, average power and speed in intermittent sprint-type explosive efforts, in a dosedependent manner, with a greater ergogenic effect when administered chronically at doses >8 mmol NO3 -. Chronic supplementation also boosted power and speed in the bench press and half squat, but did not increased isometric and isokinetic force production.
