Abstract: | Introduction: Laboral absenteeism due to temporary work incapacity is an economic and sanitary problem in Spain. Spaniards are ready to leverage digital technologies for health-related activities. The mutual insurance company in collaboration with the government agency, Social Security, manages temporary work incapacity related to common contingencies, and it can promote the digital process and interaction whit the patients through a digital channel linked to electronic medical history. Objectives: To compare the control of temporary incapacity due to common contingencies between digital and non-digital patients in the Community of Madrid, in a mutual insurance company in collaboration with Social Security, to know the patients profile and analyze possible associations. Methodology: Quantitative cross-sectional observational research. The quantitative and qualitative variables are described, bivariate analysis of qualitative variables using Chi Square, and quantitative with Mann-Whitney U, multivariate analysis using inverse binomial regression for telephone contacts and logistic regression for face-to-face or telephone assistance. Results and conclusions: 30% of the patients are digital. There are significant differences between digital and no digital patients in almost all the quantitative and qualitative variables analyzed. Digital patients have a longer average duration of their sick leave, they receive more informative emails about becoming a digital patient, women predominate and they receive more assistance. They are associated with a lower probability of telephone contacts, and a higher probability of face-to-face and telephone assistance for both the entire sample and only patients without a COVID-19 diagnosis. It implies a paradigm shift in the control of temporary incapacity with potential benefits. Its extension to other healthcare fields should be considered. |
