Abstract: The fundamental objective of this research work is to recognize the work of a whole series of artists who were pioneers in the treatment of gender issues in Spain during the sixties and seventies. The research aims to show that, despite the neglect by critics, there was a vindictive art during the late Francoism and the beginning of the transition that evidenced the oppression and marginalization of women. Despite the insurmountable distance with their foreign counterparts for obvious historical reasons, we will see that in the work of Esther Boix (1927-2014), Ana Peters (1932-2012), Mari Chordà (1942), Ángela García Codoñer (1944), Eulàlia Grau (1946) and Fina Miralles (1950), there is a desire to denounce female marginalization, the sexual division of labor or the stereotypes attributed to women, as well as a need to build an identity of their own, from their own point of view, being able to identify some of the fundamental questions posed by the theorists of second wave feminism, collected in the international arena by artists such as Judy Chicago (1939), Miriam Schapiro (1923-2015) or Martha Rosler (1943), among others. Under the aesthetics of critical realism, pop or conceptual proposals, and using various expressive procedures and languages, ranging from painting and comics to photography and action art, the work of the Spanish pioneers can be compared to the international feminist vanguard, despite the fact that in our country the official historiographic discourse has not been interested in them until recently. In this sense, the research aims to contribute to the recent line of research started just twenty years ago on art and gender issues in the context of the contemporary Spanish art scene.
