Title: El Eixample del Mar. La extensión de la ciudad de Barcelona sobre el mar como posible solución al aumento del nivel del mar a medio y largo plazo

Abstract: Sea level rise, the risk of flooding and the impact of waves due to climate change make coastal communities vulnerable territories in the short, medium and long term. The main objective of the study is to explore the extent to which the floating city is a solution to sea level rise in the city of Barcelona in the medium and long term. To develop the objective, the main methods of analysis used were document review, benchmarking, generation of maps and images of the future, case studies, online surveys and SWOT. The most important results have been the identification and classification of the main adaptation measures to sea level rise; the exploration of several cases and projects of coastal city extensions over the sea and floating cities; the prospection of an extension of Barcelona over the sea; and the identification of the main weaknesses, threats, strengths and opportunities of this prospection. The main conclusions are that there is a duality in sea level rise adaptation measures between hard or grey structural measures and soft or nature-based structural measures. That floating cities can be a sustainable solution but there is no evidence of implemented cases, only projects. However, the extensions of coastal cities on the sea do have a great variety of executed projects. Barcelona's coastline, based on climate projections, needs to be reformulated and protected from sea level rise, the risk of flooding and the impacts of waves. Extending Barcelona over the sea may be a valid solution in the medium and long term. However, a project of this scale presents strengths and opportunities, but also weaknesses and threats, and therefore needs to take into account the point of view of local stakeholders.
