Title: Bebidas energéticas en niños y adolescentes: efectos sobre el rendimiento deportivo y riesgos para la salud

Abstract: The consumption of energy drinks has reached a great extent worldwide, especially among adolescents and children, which constitutes a real problem in terms of public health, for which renowned international organizations such as the World Health Organization or the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition have developed various investigations in this regard. These energy drinks are characterized by having a similar composition of ingredients (i.e., caffeine, guarana, taurine, amino acids, glucuronolactone and other sugars, ginseng, group B vitamins and herbal extracts among others), although they can differ greatly in terms of dosage and amounts of each component since there is no uniform regulation on the composition, sale, promotion and distribution of these. The consumption of these drinks has been associated with benefits such as an increase in available energy, improvement in physical performance or a delay in the onset of fatigue and sleep, although it is important to point out that there is currently no uniform criterion regarding the effects associated with its consumption, with great controversy in this regard, with studies that find its consumption beneficial and others that contraindicate or limit it. In this literature review it has been found that its consumption generates improvements in the physical sports performance of children and adolescents (greater jump height and greater manual isometric strength), however, its side effects should be kept in mind and continue to be studied, especially for their negative influence on sleep and the cardiovascular and metabolic alterations they trigger.
