Abstract: | The publishing sector has to incorporate the environmental sustainability criteria of eco-publishing to guarantee the future of the industry. In the face of the climate emergency, the world of books must change: the implementation of sustainability policies, the obtaining of certifications and the standardisation of green strategies must be the beginning of the end for traditional publishing. The high turnover in bookshops, the relentless pace of returns or the rapid production of new releases, among many others, are trends that stand out in today's publishing world and are unsustainable both environmentally and economically. Moreover, the 21st century reader is changing consumer habits, giving preference to locally and ecologically produced products. With these trends in mind, all actors in the publishing sector need to ensure that eco-publishing criteria are incorporated throughout the life cycle of printed books. This essay shows a compilation of criteria and good practices that have to be taken into account when producing a paper book, from the moment of obtaining the raw materials to be used, until the end of the useful life of this product, when the book has to be recycled in order to contribute positively to the circular economy. |
