Abstract: This work was conceived as a dialogue between queer theory and Latin American decolonial feminism, with the aim of problematizing the possible colonial character of the binary gender organization and the sexual construction of bodies. For this, the intellectual debate inaugurated by María Lugones about the existence and acceptance of the third gender in the pre-Columbian societies of Abya Yala is addressed. The historical evidences provided by archaeology, linguistics and the literature of the chroniclers will be traced in an attempt to determine whether the binary sex-gender system appears as natural and transversal to all societies or if, on the contrary, it appeared in the subcontinent as a colonial imposition linked to the emergence of capital, race and biopolitics. Issues as important as possible alternative ways of thinking about gender beyond binarism, the design of a subject-another for feminism or the recognition of the inseparability of colonization, racialization and the gendering of bodies are at stake in this debate.
