Abstract: | The Covid-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill and confined millions of people to their homes. Libraries, not being considered an essential service, were forced to close their doors. After the initial shock, public library professionals demonstrated their capacity for adaptation and flexibility in emergency situations by organizing all kinds of activities to continue bringing culture and information to the public. All kinds of cultural activities were organized, digital collections were expanded, readings were made by telephone, books were lent at home. The aim of this research work is to show the activities and services carried out by the public libraries that took advantage of the impossibility of the presentiality to accelerate the digital transformation. For this purpose, an overview of the services, activities and initiatives implemented by public libraries during the confinement will be made, and particular cases of specific libraries will be explained. On the other hand, we will analyze the reflections and debates by library professionals that arose shortly after the whirlwind of activities, about the role that public libraries could have played if they had been considered an essential service, highlighting the discomfort of much of the group at the impossibility of opening libraries during the confinement and the restrictive protocols during the de-escalation. |
