Abstract: With the increase in life expectancy, there has been an increase in the incidence of diseases characteristic of the elderly, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and, in general, dementia. According to the OECD (2018), the prevalence of dementia in Europe stands at 7%, 8% in Spain. Bearing in mind that, as indicated by WHO, that between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will nearly double (2018), there is the need to seek protective and preventive methods in the development of dementia. Currently, several projects, at a European and worldwide level, are focused on developing prevention protection techniques for dementia. In the following work, I have reviewed the recent literature, considering two of the protective factors that describe the FINGER project (Kivipelto et al., 2013): the Mediterranean diet and exercise. The PubMed, Dialnet, PsycInfo and Scielo databases have been consulted, selecting a total of 28 articles for review. The results presented have a clear evidence of adherence to the Mediterranean diet as a preventive factor for dementia, while the results are not so clear about exercise, due to the lack of consensus between the type of exercise, intensity and frequency. Even so, the review suggests that multimodal interventions - which combine healthy diet, physical activity, leisure, cognitive training and/or a good rest - can have greater benefits in cognitive function. Future studies that expand the evidence are necessary.
