Abstract: This paper aims to analyse how FC Barcelona managed the communication of the reputation crisis derived from the case known in the media as "Barçagate". Although the episode is not yet over, as it is still in legal proceedings, the day of the crash and the following weeks and months are of particular relevance in order to find out what response the club gave to defend its interests and protect its reputation. The specific objectives of this research are to check whether the communicative actions undertaken by the club correspond to the standards proposed by the reference crisis resolution manuals, to find out whether the communication department could have prevented the crisis and to measure how the club's digital reputation was affected. The methodology designed employs two types of content analysis. On the one hand, a purely qualitative analysis, analysing all the public releases that the club sent from 17 February 2020 to 1 December 2022 in reference to "Barçagate", to check what number of steps that two reference authors in the field of crisis resolution agreed to follow, out of a total of 22, the club followed. On the other hand, a qualitative content analysis also applying quantitative elements, based on an online reputation audit, measuring the sentiment of a sample of 56 Twitter messages showing the opinion about the board and the club. The results show that FC Barcelona failed to prevent the scenario that triggered the crisis, that it did not apply sufficient crisis resolution standards and that its digital reputation was severely affected.
