Abstract

Ladies and gentlemen: we live in uncertain and troubling times. We also live in extraordinary times. Never before has the world been so prosperous, never before have so many people lived such long and healthy lives, never before have we witnessed such dazzling technology and never before have we reached, on average, such levels of education. And yet, in absolute numbers, never before have so many people lived in such poverty, never before have so many died from preventable diseases, never before has the planet been so threatened, never before have so many needed education. And it is education that fuels sustainable development, education that is fundamental to enlightened citizenship, to the peace and harmony – and even the continued life – of our species on this planet.

Vivimos en un tiempo incierto y preocupante. Pero también vivimos en un tiempo maravilloso. Nunca hasta ahora el mundo había sido tan próspero, nunca tanta gente había vivido tantos años y de forma tan saludable, nunca habíamos podido disponer de una tecnología tan extraordinaria ni habíamos alcanzado, en general, el nivel de educación que tenemos hoy. Y, sin embargo, en números absolutos, nunca tanta gente ha vivido en la pobreza, nunca han muerto tantas personas de enfermedades que se habrían podido evitar, nunca el planeta ha estado tan amenazado, nunca ha habido tanta gente necesitada de educación. Y es la educación lo que impulsa el desarrollo sostenible, lo que es fundamental para que la ciudadanía esté bien informada y para conseguir la paz y la armonía –incluso la prolongación de la vida– de nuestra especie en este planeta.

Vivim en un temps incert i preocupant. Però també vivim en un temps meravellós. Mai abans el món no havia estat tan pròsper, mai no hi havia hagut tanta gent que visqués una vida tan llarga i saludable, mai no havíem disposat d’una tecnologia tan extraordinària ni havíem assolit, en general, el nivell d’educació que tenim ara. I, tanmateix, en nombres absoluts, mai no hi havia hagut tanta gent que visqués en la pobresa, mai no havien mort tantes persones de malalties que s’haurien pogut evitar, mai el planeta no havia estat tan amenaçat, mai no hi havia hagut tanta gent necessitada d’educació. I és l’educació el que impulsa el desenvolupament sostenible, el que és fonamental perquè la ciutadania estigui ben informada i per a aconseguir la pau i l’harmonia –fins i tot la prolongació de la vida– de la nostra espècie en aquest planeta.
