Abstract: Dementia affects over 50 million people worldwide, with Alzheimer’s disease being one of its leading causes. This disease is characterized by a progressive loss of cognitive abilities and is particularly associated with memory loss and a decline in the quality of life for patients and caretaker relatives. This work gathers available evidence on the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease, with special attention given to the potential role of microglia, the immune cells of the brain, in the progression of the disease. To achieve this, an exhaustive review of literature regarding this topic has been conducted by searching various scientific databases. Obtained results have identified amyloidosis and tauopathy as key hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease while also confirming the crucial role of microglia mediated-neuroinflammation in its pathogenesis. The amyloid-inflammatory cascade hypothesis has been widely accepted within the scientific community, leading to numerous studies that highlight the therapeutic potential of modulating the immune response in the brain to battle this type of dementia.
