Abstract: Since the 1990s when the United States and the Soviet Union, each with its own GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), began to deploy these systems beyond the military domain, satellite-based positioning and navigation applications have grown enormously. Those systems are playing an increasingly prominent role in many areas of our society. Moreover, the deployment of different systems by major countries with the capacity to place satellites in orbit has conditioned an increasingly wide spectrum of GNSS signals to the point that they have revolutionised the design of receiver antennas. This research work begins with an introduction explaining the key concepts of GNSS signal reception operation and how antenna selection is very important in influencing the final performance of the system. In addition, a study of different types of antennas currently in use is carried out, comparing them according to their application in order to finally design and model them with the MATLAB® Antenna ToolboxTM program. MATLAB® is one of the most popular programs for academic use by engineering and science students. The work will analyse the viability of MATLAB® as a program for the design and modelling of this type of antenna.
