El benestar animal en el context de les protectores, refugis i centres d'acollida animal: impacte en la conducta dels gossos i en els processos d'adopció

Abstract

Actualment la majoria de protectores, refugis i centres d’acollida animal a Catalunya es troben saturats i un percentatge significatiu de les adopcions de gossos que s’aconsegueixen portar a terme resulten fallides. Una de les justificacions més comuns d’aquests retorns són els problemes de comportament postadopció, com ara les agressions, els problemes d’ansietat, les pors o els comportaments compulsius. És en aquest sentit que la present recerca s’orienta a analitzar l’impacte del benestar dels gossos mentre romanen a protectores, refugis o centres d’acollida en el seu comportament i en les posteriors adopcions, per tal de generar evidències que mostrin els nivells d’interrelació entre aquestes tres variables. L’anàlisi dels diferents factors i elements que poden tenir alguna d’influència en els gossos que han estat recollits per protectores, refugis i centres d’acollida animal, com a pas previ a les seves adopcions, mostra una correlació moderada entre benestar, comportament i èxit en les adopcions, de manera que la identificació dels factors de risc i de protecció del benestar dels gossos als centres, des d’una mirada biopsicosocial, aporta una base teòrica per poder predir els resultats dels processos d’adopció, sempre que siguin analitzats conjuntament amb la variable famílies adoptants que, tot i no ser variable diana d’aquest estudi, també s’ha identificat ha com a factor determinant de l’èxit o la fallida de les adopcions en proporcions percentuals similars al comportament animal.

Nowadays, most of the dog shelters in Catalonia are swamped and of the dog adoptions that are successfully carried out, a significant percentage are unsuccessful. One of the most common justifications for these returns is post-adoption behavioral problems, such as aggression, anxiety problems, fears or compulsive behaviors. It is in this sense that the present investigation is oriented to analyze the impact of the welfare of the dogs while they are in shelters in their behavior and in the later adoptions, in order to generate evidence that shows the levels of interrelation between the three variables. The analysis of the different factors and elements that can have some influence on the dogs that have been collected by animal shelters, as a previous step to their adoptions, shows a moderate correlation between welfare, behavior and success in adoptions, so that the identification of risk and protection factors for the welfare of dogs in the centers, from a biopsychosocial point of view, provides a theoretical basis for predicting the results of adoption processes, provided that they are analyzed together with the variable adoptive families which, although not being a variable directly considered, has also been identified as a determining factor in the success or failure of adoptions in similar percentage proportions to animal behavior.
