Author: Rodríguez Ramírez, José María

Abstract: Background: A thorough understanding of the complex effects of food environments is necessary given the growing obesity epidemic in our society, which is nourished by the excess and increased accessibility of ultra-processed foods with high energy density but of low nutritional value. Objectives: The objective of this research is to analyze the perception of the food environment of a population between 40- and 80-years old living in Catalonia. Methodology: A mixed methodology has been used based, on the one hand, on the quantitative analysis of 145 responses to the modified NEMS-P-MED questionnaire incorporating aspects of sustainability and on the other using the qualitative methodology of focus groups in a sub-sample among the target population that has participated in the modified NEMS-P-MED questionnaire and that has been supported by the Photovoice methodology, a participatory method through visual data and group discussion. Results: The results of this study indicate the perception of a high accessibility and availability of varied and healthy products as well as a high interest in following healthy and balanced diets. Nonetheless, the consumption analysis shows a departure from the recommendations of the Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Agency, recommendations that are aligned with the Mediterranean Diet pattern. Conclusions: This research study is the first work carried out in Catalonia on the perception of the food environment, where a combined mixed methodology has been used. The main results found have proposed new research routes not sufficiently explored so far as well as highlighting the need for policies and intervention programs that allow actors in the food system to direct the transition to a healthier and more sustainable behavior.
