Abstract: The objective of this Master's Thesis is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of backtracking mechanics in metroidvania subgenre games, aiming to create a prototype that implements various player orientation systems using techniques from level design, player guidance, and environmental narrative. The goal is to make this mechanic clearer and more accessible to players of all skill levels. To achieve this, a methodology will be employed that includes establishing a thorough theoretical framework encompassing all relevant elements of the project. Subsequently, an analysis sheet based on this theory will be developed to deeply examine three selected metroidvania games for their significance to the study, considering key aspects of their design and gameplay. Building upon this foundation, multiple iterations of the prototype will be developed and tested by a diverse group of players. The final version of the project will incorporate feedback obtained from these tests. Finally, conclusions will be drawn to evaluate the effectiveness of the techniques employed, and future directions for prototype development will be defined.
