Abstract: | There is growing interest in the antioxidant potential of quercetin supplementation to improve health and performance in athletes. Quercetin is a bioactive flavonoid with antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties, present in various foods. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy of quercetin in enhancing the antioxidant capacity of skeletal muscle, sports performance, and recovery in athletes. An exhaustive search was conducted in the Scopus database, selecting 10 randomized controlled trials with human athletes. Some trials indicated modest improvements in fatigue resistance and aerobic capacity, while others found no significant differences in antioxidant capacity, performance, or inflammation. It can have a positive effect on antioxidant capacity and physical performance under specific conditions in an untrained but physically active population, with more pronounced effects after practicing eccentric exercises. The combination of quercetin with other compounds such as vitamin D could enhance its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect. No serious adverse effects were reported, suggesting that quercetin supplementation is safe. |
