Author: Noguera Munar, Elisabet

Abstract: Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequently diagnosed multifactorial disorder in women of childbearing age. Even today, its etiology is not clearly determined, but it appears to be a combination of exogenous and endogenous factors. There is no single treatment for the improvement of PCOS, but different ways of acting, being the pharmacological one of the most frequent applied. Due to the numerous complications and side effects of classic drugs, the first line of action to address PCOS should be based on lifestyle modifications, especially on diet. Objectives: To delve deeper into the different dietary therapeutic options for the treatment of PCOS, studying the effects on patients. Clarify the clinical, reproductive, biochemical and anthropometric results of diet therapy as an alternative to pharmacological therapy. Methodology: A literature review was conducted between march and june 2024 in PUBMED database using keywords or MeSH terms. The publications were evaluated qualitatively to determine their possible eligibility. Results and Discussion: A total of 38 studies were included. The Mediterranean diet, low-calorie ketogenic diet and the dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) are the ones that have the most evidence in the articles. High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets did not find sufficiently conclusive results. Conclusions: Diet therapy can be considered a valid option for PCOS patients. More studies are needed to elucidate these results.
