Abstract: The demographic evolution in Spain, like other developed countries, is experiencing accelerated aging due to a low birth rate. This phenomenon presents new challenges for the segment of the population over 65 years old, who are disengaged from their professional activities and are in a state of non-employment. Loneliness has become a significant issue within this age group, negatively affecting physical and emotional well-being. This study delves into the relationships and perceptions related to the issue of loneliness among individuals over 65 years old, both men and women, in the region of Cantabria, in both rural and urban areas, and examines current interventions aimed at mitigating this feeling of loneliness in the specified age group. To achieve this, a primarily qualitative methodology was employed with a sample of 14 participants, composed of individuals over 65 years old from both rural and urban areas. Data collection was conducted remotely, using telephone and audio-recording applications like WhatsApp, which are easily manageable by the participants. The semi-structured interview technique was used, followed by content analysis supported by the QDA Miner Lite software. Additionally, a questionnaire was administered to gather sociodemographic data along with the instruments from the Lubben Social Network Scale-6 and the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (2022). The results obtained indicate that there is indeed a feeling of loneliness related to social networks and personal factors (living alone, having children, etc.). The interventions implemented by the administrations are highly valued by the public, suggesting that continuing along this path could be an effective strategy for alleviating the feeling of loneliness.
