El verisme a l'òpera: Un retrat de la vida quotidiana amb intensitat emocional

Abstract

In the context of the 19th century, the recent unification of the Italian state triggers a massive migration of the population from an impoverished south to the prosperous north, on the way to the American dream. This leads to sociocultural tensions that inspire the French and Italian literature, among others. This cultural collision also influences the arts in general, particularly opera, with the decline of bel canto and the birth of operatic verismo. The Italian “Giovine Scuola”, fostered by composers like Bizet, Leoncavallo, Puccini or Giordano, embraces realism and naturalism, ushering in a new era in the genre. Despite fragmented opinions, verismo propels the evolution of opera, raising questions about its continuity in the looming 20th century, as well as in theatre and cinema. This research project aims to give voice to different opinions and draw argued conclusions to create a criterion and design new research foundations for the future.

En el context del segle XIX, la recent unificació de l’estat italià desencadena una migració massiva de la població d’un sud empobrit cap al pròsper nord, de camí al somni americà. Això suposa tensions socioculturals que inspiren la literatura francesa i italiana, entre d’altres. Aquesta col·lisió cultural també influeix en les arts en general, i en l’òpera en particular, amb la davallada del bel canto i el naixement del verisme operístic. La “Giovine Scuola” italiana, promoguda per compositors com Bizet, Leoncavallo, Puccini o Giordano, adopta el realisme i el naturalisme, encetant una nova era en el gènere. Tot i la diversitat d’opinions, el verisme impulsa l’evolució de l’òpera plantejant preguntes sobre la seva continuïtat en un segle XX que ja s’albira, així com en el teatre i el cinema. L’objectiu d’aquest treball de recerca és donar veu a diferents judicis i extraure conclusions argumentades per a crear un criteri i establir nous fonaments de futura recerca.
