Abstract: Translation has recently re-emerged as a didactic strategy in foreign language teaching as a tool that promotes reflection on language and makes it easier for students to link their mother tongue with the language they are learning; however, there is still little research on its effect on strengthening specific skills such as written competence, and the grammatical and lexical component in beginner-level students. The purpose of this study was to design and implement a didactic unit focused on back translation activities from Spanish to English, evaluating its impact on Colombian learners at the A1-A2 level. Therefore, this work was framed within a qualitative approach with elements of action-research, aimed at exploring how translation can serve as a pedagogical tool to reinforce written skills in learning English for this particular population. In order to probe its effect, a pilot test was carried out with 18 first-year high school students and was evaluated by reviewing the evidence of the activities presented by the students and a questionnaire was applied with closed questions (Likert scale) and open questions to evaluate the learners' experience with the translation activities and their relevance in achieving the objectives of the didactic unit. The results show that most of the students were able to translate short texts and apply basic grammatical structures such as the present simple and continuous tense, demonstrating an adequate use of the vocabulary studied. However, recurring difficulties were observed, such as the omission of the indefinite article (a/an). Furthermore, the findings obtained highlight the usefulness of integrating audiovisual resources, group dynamics and practical translation tasks in the classroom to consolidate linguistic content. Finally, this work aims to contribute to the field of foreign language teaching by demonstrating the effectiveness of translation as a pedagogical tool to strengthen grammatical and lexical competence at basic levels. Likewise, this study offers timely information for future similar teaching proposals in diverse educational contexts, helping to enrich teaching practices in the teaching of English as a foreign language.
