Development of a multi-platform application for the University Virtual Campus

Abstract

The final degree project focuses on developing a multiplatform mobile application for the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) Virtual Campus, using Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile. The project aims to provide students access to academic and administrative features through native mobile applications on both iOS and Android platforms, extending the current web functionality. The development follows the waterfall methodology through four main phases: requirements analysis, design, implementation, and testing. The analysis phase combines secondary research and primary data collection through questionnaires to understand user needs. The design phase employs User-Centered Design principles, creating and evaluating prototypes with actual UOC students. The implementation uses Kotlin Multiplatform with a Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) architecture, enabling code sharing between platform while maintaining native user experiences. The application integrates with both the Canvas Learning Management System and Campus APIs, implementing secure authentication and efficient data synchronization. The resulting application successfully delivers core functionalities like course management, academic record visualization, administrative procedures information, and multilingual support in Spanish, Catalan, and English. Testing validates the implementation across both platforms, confirming reliable performance and user experience.
