Abstract: The rituals were the books of each diocese that, until the Second Vatican Council, were used for the administration of five sacraments (baptism, marriage, reconciliation, communion of the sick and extremuntion), as well as for other celebrations such as funerals, processions, blessings... Latin was the main publishing language, but Catalan also appeared. In the vernacular language were written the parts for the faithful: catechetic explanations, exhortations, questions... In order for them to understand what they celebrated. In fact, since the 14th century the synods insist on the need for priests to have materials in romance. These guidelines were ratified by the Council of Trent and were the legal basis that allowed the continued use of Catalan during the years following the Nueva Planta decrees. The rituals constitute a testimony of linguistic survival in the face of the Bourbon absolutism of the 18th century. Aguiló was impressed by these texts, generated over the centuries independently in scattered areas, which he considered a proof of the unity of the language. Texts that have resonated in countless acts throughout the linguistic field, reaching a social dimension unthinkable by any other Catalan text. Even in complicated centuries for the language, during which the prestige of the episcopal shields sheltered them. Despite all this, we have few studies on them: only two. It is precisely those that I contrast with Valencia ritual of 1514. A few succinct comparisons that reveal some interesting conclusions. Along with these, I also offer an update of the collection of rituals in the Catalan linguistic scope.
