Abstract: During the last decades, within a context in which the ICT influence is prevailing, the university education model has changed dramatically. In parallel, the student and teacher roles have changed: the student is no longer a passive reader, but a reader that participates actively in the learning process, providing complementary material in different media to the input information. It is in this context that the concept of augmented reading appears. The Open University of Catalonia is an example of future trends in university education, in which the student is the one who is in control of learning and the educational institutions are adapting themselves to the new user needs, favouring flexibility, mobility and the essential technological tools to carry out this new model of education.
