Abstract: The application of bioinformatics tools to study cancer aids the understanding of their genetic origins. This study involved chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), a haematological malignancy of B-lymphocytes. BIRC3 and POT1 are two genes mutated in patients with CLL. This paper focuses on the search for homologues to these genes as possible markers of CLL. A search of genes associated with CLL returned HIV-1 sequences in cancer associated genes: BIRC3, POT1, PT53 and OXSR1. Oxidative stress may be an underlying factor since it is associated with a range of malignancies, including OXSR1 gene in patients with CLL.
