Abstract: The emergence of transport infrastructures in the city strengthened the potential of growth, promoting changes in its morphology and causing huge transformations in their surroundings. The current paper focuses on the measurement of the spatial and temporal growth in relation to urban infrastructures, in particular railways and roads. An historical GIS has been created for this purpose and has been used in order to detect which infrastructures had more influence to attract urban growth in each period of time. The abovementioned GIS includes georeferenced data for 17 Catalan cities, between 1850 and 2010. In particular, it contains the evolution of their urban footprints, the routing of each road and railway infrastructure and the location of each station. The evolution of the urban growth has been interpolated using polygons with equal characteristics, and it allows to quantify the growth but also to estimate the distance from each feature to the nearest infrastructure. This analysis highlights which infrastructure has been more decisive in each period, confirming the initial hypothesis and providing a new methodology to understand the territorial effects of transportation networks.
