Abstract: As it happened with photo rollers, the radiographic film started disappearing replaced by a series of digital engines placed within X-ray devices, up to the present, when Gadolinium or Cesium detectors are used. All these systems create images, in DICOM format, apt for the diagnosis. These images must be stored and transmitted, for their viewing and archiving, through the so-called PACS, "Picture Archiving and Communication Systems". The PACS were departmental at the beginning (radiology), but with the time they were extended throughout the Hospital and Primary Centres, where the Referent Physician could consult the images, with less resolution, together with the report of the radiologist. These systems have three basic components: acquisition, archiving, and display. To implement and make them effective, the Communication Systems are of fundamental importance: the requirements of the DICOM or WADO protocols, and the geographical extension will delimit the necessary communication networks: dedicated / shared, Internet, VPNs, fiber links , etc. This project focuses on the analysis of needs and the design of one of these systems (PACS) for the case of a University Hospital of the Public Health System, and the possible connections with other Centres, the University Hospital Central of Asturias, in Spain. The use of open source and commercial code systems is valued, but the fact that they are considered "Medical Devices", which are therefore likely to affect people's health, and which are regulated by the European Union, does not allows the possibility of developing a new one.
