Els usos lingüístics: tres consideracions sobre la delimitació conceptual, la consolidació i la modificabilitat

Abstract

L'article reprèn algunes qüestions de fons que sempre han estat presents en el debat sociolingüístic i polític sobre l'evolució dels usos lingüístics en la societat catalana, alhora que planteja tres consideracions que tenen una intenció clarificadora: En primer lloc, s'avança en la delimitació més clara de dos camps diferents dels usos: els institucionalitzats (o institucionals) i els individualitzats (o individuals). Per afinar en la distinció conceptual entre aquests dos grans tipus d'usos i en la precisió i la transparència de la terminologia amb què els designem, es proposa l'ús dels termes usos professionals, d'una banda, i usos particulars, de l'altra. En segon lloc, s'insisteix en la necessitat d'identificar i distingir el grau de consolidació dels hàbits de comportament lingüístic, en els seus diferents estadis. Finalment, es recorda que en la nostra història sociolingüística i en el debat sobre la política lingüística hi ha hagut una certa oscil·lació 'un efecte pèndol' en la importància atribuïda a l'un o l'altre dels dos grans tipus d'usos lingüístics a què ens hem referit. L'article planteja la necessitat de ponderar adequadament la interdependència i la complementarietat entre els usos que s'anomenen, com hem vist, professionals i particulars, i s'insisteix que cal reconèixer la importància de tots dos usos, i no subratllar la importància d'uns en detriment de la dels altres.

Firstly, it provides a clearer outline of two different fields of use, namely institutionalised (or institutional) uses and individualised (or individual) uses. In order to define more closely the conceptual distinction between these two basic types of use and to lend greater precision and transparency to the terms by which they are designated, it is proposed that professional uses and private uses, respectively, should be employed. Secondly, insistence is placed on the need to identify and distinguish the degree of consolidation of language behaviour habits in their various stages. Thirdly, it is recalled that in Catalan sociolinguistic history and in the debate on language policy there has been a certain fluctuation 'a pendulum effect' with respect to the importance attributed to one or the other of these two basic types of language use. The paper poses the need to weigh appropriately the interdependence and complementarity of professional and private uses, insisting that the importance of both types should be acknowledged without emphasising either to the detriment of the other.
