Abstract: | Gluten-free diet is the only treatment for patients with celiac disease and other gluten-related disorders such as nonceliac gluten sensitivity. However, in recent years the gluten-free diet has gained popularity among people who do not have any gluten-related diseases. This type of trend, in many cases, is driven by recognized figures from the world of cinema or sport and have a great power of influence. There are also many people who, after reading articles, listening to comments from friends or watching a television program, decide to eliminate gluten from their diet without further ado. These people claim that they are physically better off since they have stopped eating gluten-containing foods, have lost weight or have a higher sports performance. Most of the time, these effects are not directly related to removing gluten from their diet, but they have stopped consuming processed, high-calorie products that contain gluten. Most nutritionists and health experts believe that a gluten-free diet is only necessary for those with celiac disease and other gluten-related conditions. The aim of this Final Master´s Project is to compile the scientific evidence that there is on whether promoting a gluten-free diet in healthy people implies some kind of proven medical benefit, or in autoimmune diseases. |
