Smart learning spaces considering the integration of the pedagogical, environmental and digital dimensions: a systematic review
(Springer, 2025-07-30) Bautista, Guillermo; López Costa, Marta
This article investigates the evolution of school spaces in response to modern educational demands, highlighting the shift from traditional instruction models to dynamic, flexible learning environments. Despite existing literature (Byers et al., 2018; Barrett et al., 2015) demonstrating the positive impact of innovative educational spaces on academic performance and well-being, there is limited comprehensive guidance on designing high-quality learning environments. The study employs bibliometric analysis to map the research landscape on smart classrooms, identifying emerging trends and gaps. It defines the scope of smart classrooms, reviews influential research linking spaces and learning outcomes and categorises the research to offer a framework for assessing educational space quality. The analysis covers articles from 2005 to 2023, extracted from WoS and SCOPUS databases, and follows the PRISMA methodology. Findings reveal significant growth in smart classroom research, with notable contributions from Australia, China, Spain, the UK, and the USA. Key themes include the integration of technology, flexible spatial design, and their effects on pedagogy and student engagement. This study underscores the need for continued research and interdisciplinary collaboration to further understand and enhance the role of educational spaces in modern learning environments.

From ESCAC to Netflix – Interrogating the new spaces of film development in Catalonia: The case of El Páramo (2022)
(Intellect, 2025-05-30) Pujol Ozonas, Cristina; Sánchez-Navarro, Jordi
This article interrogates the evolution of film development in Catalonia and Spain in the second decade of the twenty-first century. It focuses on the industrial approach and the emergence of new development spaces such as labs, residencies and incubators. These initiatives were launched as a result of the reduction in direct government funding for projects and found a solid base in a new system of support for filmmaking based on development grants. Drawing on a case study of ‘La Bestia’, a project by Catalan filmmaker David Casademunt that resulted in the film El Páramo with support from incubators and labs, this study underscores the importance of film festivals and schools in the emerging talent market. The research delves into aspects related to marketing, cultural management, the influence of digital platforms and the vulnerability of up-and-coming creators. Ultimately, the study highlights the para-industrial role of cultural and educational institutions as mediators between creativity and the economy.
