Abstract: The aim of this paper is to link the role of the Egyptian obelisks with the appearance of the great commemorative columns in Rome. To this end, we have chosen to carry out a bibliographical review of the articles and publications that, independently, have dealt with the different points in the process of the configuration of the commemorative columns as a typology of imperial power. Until now, this process has not been studied as a single topic as a whole, but rather the different aspects that form part of it have been studied in a fragmentary manner. In this paper we aim to bring these studies together by critically reviewing them. To this end, in this work we cover from the formal antecedents of columns in the Greek world to the later use of Roman monuments by modern empires and states, including the ideological and symbolic role of obelisks and, of course, the great imperial works with Trajan's column as their highest expression. Rather than providing new data and new information on these monuments, we aim to provide a different approach through their conception within an evolutionary process and the shaping of a typology of imperial power.
