Title: La diplomacia de las mujeres indígenas en los procesos de construcción de paz en Colombia
Author: Alonso Segoviano, María Mercedes
Tutor: Berg-Rodríguez, Alexis
Abstract: Indigenous peoples at international level have gained space in their indigenous diplomacy work, facilitated by United Nations Declarations over the rights of indigenous peoples and, specifically in recent decades, by the growth of environmental problems and climate change, given the fundamental role of indigenous communities in the preservation of the territories and natural resources. Indigenous diplomacy is being exercised by indigenous women from a different conception of indigenous feminism. Indigenous women's proposals enrich the concept and practice of indigenous diplomacy. This is leading to the incorporation of concepts such as territory or collective rights, which have not been prioritised in the agenda of demands for women's rights by Western feminism, more focused on individual rights. This indigenous feminism appeals to indigenous women's own construction and claims an approach based on ethnicity, culture, history linked to colonialism. It is not exempt from differences with Western feminism. The specific case of the Indigenous Women's Programme in Chocó, Colombia, shows how close knowledge of the reality of the territory and of indigenous women in the communities is a necessary and fundamental element when it comes to advocacy and legitimises the action of indigenous diplomacy. The work of the leaders of the Chocó Indigenous Women's Programme is an example of how to demand their rights in adverse environments.
