Abstract: Deficits in phonological processing, specifically phonological awareness, have been widely related to specific learning disorders in reading (dyslexia), however, there is controversy in research regarding whether specific learning disorders in mathematics (dyscalculia) can be related to phonological deficits and whether performance in phonological awareness tasks differs from specific Learning Disorders (LD) in reading. In this cross-sectional, non-experimental, descriptive study we compared the development of phonological awareness in second grade boys and girls diagnosed with LD in reading versus LD in mathematics. Results indicates that there are no significant differences in phonological performance in the Prueba de evaluación de Conciencia Fonológica (PECFO; Varela and De Barbieri, 2015) between children with dyslexia and infants with dyscalculia (U= 104, p=.638), and in both cases they present higher percentages of deficits in syllabic and phonemic awareness. The absence of differences in the phonological performances of the groups studied suggests that the difficulties found could be explained by deficits in common domains, specifically phonological awareness, in coherence with the hypotheses that propose the existence of a common deficit. This evidence supports Dehaene and Cohen's (1995) triple code model that points to the existence of a phonological verbal code related to the retrieval of arithmetic facts. However, as the sample size is small, the interpretation and extrapolation of these results should be done with caution.
