Abstract: The aim of the Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning(RPEL) is to show all the competences that a person possesses,independently of the context in which their acquisitionoriginally took place. This paper analyzes the role of RPELwithin a wide vision of education and its key elements areintroduced. The role of RPEL in higher education is commentedon, and the opportunities and challenges that this process createsfor the main participants in higher education are highlighted.
