Abstract: There are two sides to every coin, and information and communication technologies (ICT) are no exception. They do indeed make work easier and more efficient; however, they also have the potential to trigger psychosocial effects and negative emotions in workers forced to interact with them. This phenomenon, referred to as technostress, has been studied in a range of contexts and in different countries, yet there are no empirical studies addressing the matter in Chile. The aim of this project, therefore, is to localize and validate a Spanish-language version of the Technostress Creators Inventory (TCI) and subsequently determine the predictive capacity of technostress on Chilean workers' role stress and individual productivity. To begin our research, we conduct a bibliometric analysis of the scientific production on technostress indexed in SCOPUS for the period between 1982 and 2017, in its entirety. We then test our hypotheses: structural equation models are used on data we collected through an online survey administered to a convenience sample of 1,047 workers from various Chilean organizations. Upon completing the psychometric studies, we find that the TCI instrument offers high validity and reliability after some re-specifications (ie eliminating five items). The resulting measurement model comprises 18 items and five dimensions and has proven adequate in every pattern. The levels of technostress detected in our sample are lower than those observed in previous research; however, they are high enough to demonstrate, using the research model, that technostress negatively affects individual productivity and increases levels of role stress. The results also show that role stress does not decrease individual productivity; role overload, however, does help to statistically explain this occurrence. Thanks to our research, we are able to conclude that the population is in fact experiencing technostress and that preventive measures and technological training are pivotal to workers' chances at overcoming this struggle. Technostress has the potential to become an additional source of stress for workers in Chile, who are often required to work beyond their scheduled timetable and thus have less time to rest. In light of these facts, companies must pay more attention to the invasive power of ICT.
