Abstract: Wireless communications systems have become very significant in public transport. So much so that these systems have a direct impact on transport performance and the added value they can provide to both infrastructure operators and customers. The aim of this work is to set out the factors to be taken into account when designing a broadband train-land communications system in the context of metropolitan suburban rail public transport. To this end, the main services to be considered in the design of the system are described, the different problems affecting the propagation of radio signals in the environment of a tunnel are raised and the most advanced technologies that can facilitate the path towards radio convergence in the railway industry sector are detailed. Finally, in order to transfer the knowledge acquired to the practical field and present the set of premises to be addressed in the design of a broadband train-land network, a real application scenario is proposed which will serve as an example to reflect the underlying complexity of such a deployment. As a conclusion of the work, we highlight the horizon of possibilities that exist to continue developing and advancing in the field of suburban railway radio communications, in order to evolve towards an efficient, sustainable and safe transport model in which trains and customers will have high-speed connectivity.
