Abstract: Background: The Agro-ecological Cooperatives (AC) in Barcelona consume local, seasonal, socio-economically responsible organic food and are spaces of social and community interrelation. The Mediterranean diet (MD) is considered a healthy eating pattern Objective: To evaluate the adherence to the Mediterranean Diet of the Agro-ecological cooperatives (AC) consumption units in Barcelona. Methodology: Descriptive observational study performed on 256 food cooperatives shoppers of 27 AC. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed using a validated questionnaire that provides a score between 0 and 14 (MEDAS-14). Data collection was performed electronically by adapting the questionnaire and in addition, data on the length of stay in the AC and the consumption of processed vegetable protein were collected. Results: The median adherence to MD was 10.0 (IQR 2) points and a low level of adherence was observed in 7.4% of respondents, 36.7% with an intermediate level of adherence and 55.9% with a high level of adherence. No significant differences were found in the score of MD adherence and length of stay in ACs. Conclusions: The consumption units of the Agro-ecological cooperatives in the city of Barcelona currently have a high level of adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. This level of adherence is independent of the time of membership in the cooperative.
