Title: Anàlisi sobre l'origen del Castell Monestir Sant Miquel d'Escornalbou
Author: Sanabra Ramos, Josep

Abstract: This research work aims to analyse the different schools of opinion that point to the Roman and Arab origins of the first fortifications of the Escornalbou mountain. In this sense, a varied list of documentary sources has been consulted to approach us in a solvent way to this controversy raised by historiography. At the same time, we have carried out fieldwork intending to discover new vestiges that help us to reveal empirically the origin of the first fortification. The focus of the research has been to highlight the reasons why the different civilizations that occupied the current province of Tarragona decided to build a walled settlement on the Escornalbou mountain. The first reason revolves around the fact of guarding the various galena mines, so abundant in the area. The second is as a landmark of the territory, both the Romans, considering the proximity of Tàrraco, as well as the Arabs, considering the location of Escornalbou in the same northern Andalusian border. As a starting point, we have oriented the first part of the work on analysing the context in which the reconstruction of the remaining runes of the Castell d'Escornalbou took place at the beginning of the 20th century. Thus, the Catalan Renaissance is instituted as the Catalan intellectual movement in charge of structuring the recovery and reconstruction of Catalan history and culture, and particularly, the reconstruction of Escornalbou. Finally, we have divided the corpus of the work into four points from which we study the schools of opinion and the fieldwork. Thus, the first part deals with the reconstruction of the castle in the 20th century, the second part tries to answer the purpose of the construction of the fortification, the third part analyses the different walls of the fortification and the fourth part the mining activity of Escornalbou from our fieldwork.
