Abstract: eConsulta is an asynchronous communication tool between primary care physicians and patients. A systematic review of 16 articles related to the reduction of face-to-face visits, more frequent uses, perceptions and characteristics of primary care physicians and patients has been carried out. There is a broad consensus among studies that this tool generates high satisfaction for both patients and primary care professionals. However, it has been observed that the most common uses of eConsulta diverge depending on the country where it is used. On the other hand, the most relevant barrier found in the review was the perception of primary care professionals about the increase workload and the few digital resources of some patients. However, the involvement of primary care professionals is essential to empower the population in terms of digital health. Therefore, despite the great satisfaction reported, it is necessary to generate strategies to optimize the functionality of this tool by overcoming the existing barriers to guarantee widespread implementation. Finally, it has been concluded that the eConsulta has significantly reduced face-to-face visits with a satisfactory perception, being a good alternative to face-to-face visits.
