Author: Heras Aguilera, Ana de las
Tutor: Prado-Fonts, Carles
Abstract: Humour stands as a big challenge within the audio-visual translation area and, more specifically, towards the act of dubbing. In order to provide an example of this, three sitcoms has been chosen as a sample of how humour can be portrayed through television: Friends, Modern Family and Ghosts; separated by ten years respectively. The materials will count on the first season of each of them and it will be compared the original version to the European Spanish version. Thus, the objective of this final dissertation is to show how humour is portrayed through this genre. Moreover, the theoretical background will deal with the definition of humour together with the different humour theories, as well as with the definition of dubbing and an explanation of the different humorous elements used in them. Finally, the strategies selected to face the different issues regarding translation of humorous elements will be explained in order to be able to use them for the analysis. All this will be unified in that analysis, where examples of humorous elements and the strategies used for their translation will be exposed together with a brief explanation.
