Abstract: Distance learning Universities and degrees are increasing, including emergency virtual education forced by COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, so we are in a context in which it is appropriate to reflect on the criteria and mechanisms used to guarantee its quality, and their suitability. Based on the bibliographic references, and the specific guidelines and orientations developed by some organizations (as ENQA, EADTU, REACU, ANECA, AQU...), this project analyzes how these guidelines have been integrated into the degrees' accreditation models in Spain. To what extent -looking at results to date- the application of the current evaluation model to distance learning is suitable and effective for its purpose, taking into account some particularities that characterize this type of education. This master's thesis analyzes the perspectives and trends developed in the distance HE quality assurance's field, highlights main challenges and opportunities identified, and puts forward some proposals that can contribute to face the challenge to promote, within the assessment processes' framework, both continuous improvement and excellence's recognition, while ensuring the compliance of requirements for a quality higher education.
