Abstract: The purpose of satellite communications systems is to provide wireless coverage to complement and extend terrestrial communications networks to achieve global coverage. One of the goals to be achieved in the coming years is the integration of satellites with 5G networks to provide wireless access with improved data rates. One of the physical layer techniques used by 5G is Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO). Although this technology is widely used in terrestrial communications systems, its massive nature still makes its integration in satellite communications systems complex. In this work we propose to study the opportunities for analysis of the space segment and the terrestrial segment. In the space segment, a design tool such as the General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT) will be used to simulate the orbits of LEO satellite constellations. In the terrestrial segment, we plan to analyze the opportunities for integration of massive MIMO in satellites and propose a viable solution from a systems point of view. The massive MIMO techniques to be analyzed are adaptive algorithms and non-coherent communications. Adaptive algorithms in beamforming perform pointing to the desired directions eliminating interference and improving communication, helping the development of fifth generation technologies, which will use massive MIMO. On the other hand, non-coherent communication is proposed as an alternative to the drawbacks of massive MIMO in coherent systems. MATLAB will be used to study both techniques.
