Abstract: Cardiac pulse monitoring of patients requires systems and algorithms capable of detecting cardiac disorders such as arrhythmias. This project aims to create an algorithm to detect QRS complexes and arrhythmias by processing electrocardiogram signals (ECG) through FPGAs. The proposed method is based on Pan and Tompkins algorithm but employs a new technique for detecting QRS complexes. First, original signal filtering is processed through Matlab due to the complexity of VHDL filtering implementation. After filtering the signal, it will be processed by the FPGA using the implemented algorithm. Finally, after the detection of QRS complexes, the decision-making phase begins where the FPGA decides whether it is ECG with normal rhythm or arrhythmia. To validate the performance and reliability of the algorithm, different ECG signals obtained through the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, which contains 48 half-hour ECGs, will be processed.
