Abstract: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) from the omega-3 (n-3) and omega-6 (n-6) lines are the precursors to eicosanoids, which are molecules that modulate the inflammatory response. Those that originate from the n-6 line are mostly pro-inflammatory, in contrast to those derived from the n-3 line, which mainly have an anti-inflammatory effect. The present work focuses on reviewing recent research about n-3 PUFA supplementation in different diseases that involve abnormal inflammation, either as a consequence of, or during the course of the disease.
