Abstract: This EHEA Postgraduate's Degree Final Project Dissertation on East Asian Societies at the Open University of Catalonia scans the life of Boku, the main character in the tetralogy "The Rat" by the Japanese contemporary writer Haruki Murakami, embedded in a late capitalism postmodern society. Departing from the standpoint that Boku has got an "empty self", his leitmotiv is to find out his own identity and to give an answer to the existentialist ontological question ¿Who Am I?. When reading his life in chronological order from the age of 20 to 34 years old, we realise that Boku experiences an evolution when he gets in contact with the myth and the spiritual world of which, both of them, offer him the possibility to answer the ontological question affirmatively, as well as getting a "filled self". Therefore, it is this way that we can establish that the spiritual way is one that allows humans to shape one's identity.
