Abstract: This end of postgrad project aims to research the use of computer aided translation (CAT) tools in the translation of a literary text. Its objective is to find out whether translation memories and termbases can be of any use in a literary translation task. It will also investigate whether segmentation rules have an effect on the use of translation memories and on the resulting translation. A translation of a segment of the novel Catch 22 will be carried out in two phases with two different segmentation rules, using OmegaT and translation memories created with an existing translation of the novel. It will be seen that the segmentation rules have a notable effect on the use of the memories, but that the memories have a limited effect on the process, and that the resulting translation rigidly follows the structure of the original. The results will show that the CAT tools have limited use in literary translation.
