Abstract: Patients with chronic renal failure treated with hemodialysis suffer from a special form of malnutrition called PEW or MIA syndrome. There is no method capable of measuring by itself such a complex dynamic syndrome, which requires the determination of multiple indicators to detect it. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted to estimate the nutritional status of 104 patients, using the majority of available methods and establishing the degree of correlation between them. Biochemical, anthropometric, functional muscle estimation, body composition, intake, inflammation, dialysis dose and integrated methods were determined. Bivariate correlations were established between the methods in order to determine if any of them could be used as "gold standard" for the nutritional assessment of this type of patients. The analysis of the data reveals how some classic markers such as total proteins or % of lymphocytes or even body fat estimators show poor correlations. In general muscle mass and cell mass usually show adequate correlations with each other by any method. Methods of functional muscle estimation such as dynamometry showed a strong correlation both with early indicators of nutritional (biochemical) and late (anthropometry) deterioration. The estimator that shows a greater degree of concordance and that can therefore be considered as a "gold standart" is the MIS. Although the estimated prevalence of malnutrition varies according to the marker used; the common point of all of them is that the malnutrition of the patients in hemodialysis is high, presenting values higher than 50% in a moderate degree of malnutrition; which can be corrected with an adequate nutritional intervention.
