Abstract: The first-line therapy prescribed for patients to lose weight is daily calorie restriction. However, other alternatives have developed such as intermittent fasting: a dietary approach that involves intercalating normal daily caloric intake with a short period of severe calorie restriction. This is a bibliographic review of articles found within the Pubmed database. The objective is examining the current evidence of the effect of intermittent fasting in obese adults in relation to weight loss and cardiometabolic health, to identify the adherence and side effects of intermittent fasting; and to analyze if there are differences in intermittent fasting between men and women. The results show that intermittent fasting produces a significant weight loss, although the difference is not significant when compared to daily calorie restriction. Both protocols achieve improvements in regards to cardiometabolic parameters. Cholesterol decreases significantly in both groups. The adherence to both diets is high, although it decreases over time. Side effects do not differ between both groups. Most studies found that the energy restriction was greater in the intermittent fasting group. None of the studies reported differences in regards to the effects of intermittent fasting in women. More studies are needed in order to clarify the differences between both diets.
