Title: Ideación suicida y coeficiente intelectual en adolescentes psiquiátricos de la provincia de Salamanca
Author: Vaquero Soilán, Paula
Tutor: Alvarez-Garcia, Alicia
Abstract: Background: Suicide is a worldwide public health problem in which adolescents are a high risk group. Contradictory outcomes obtained about the relationship between IQ and suicidal behaviour make necessary further investigations. Objective: To establish the relationship between IQ and suicidal ideation in outpatient psychiatric adolescents in Salamanca province. Hypothesis: High IQ adolescents (IQ>115) will show greater suicidal ideation. Method: Selective methodology of prospective ex post facto transversal design with quasi-control group. Instruments: Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV) and Beck Suicidal Ideation Scale (EBIS). Participants: Not probabilistic incidental sampling. 30 adolescents between 12 and 16 years old (73% male and average 14,74±1,39 years old). Results: Outpatient psychiatric adolescents in Salamanca province with high IQ (IQ>115) show greater suicidal ideation (confidence interval 95%). IQ and suicidal ideation are positive related, the risk of having suicidal ideation is 2,30 times bigger on outpatient psychiatric adolescents with high IQ; and the fraction of psychiatric adolescents that show suicidal ideation is 5,78 times bigger on adolescents with high IQ. Conclusions: There is a positive relationship between high IQ and suicidal ideation in outpatient psychiatric adolescents in Salamanca province. That allows us to go in depth in the study of the early risk factors associated to the suicidal risk in adolescents, making possible the improvement of the prevention strategies directed to this group.
