Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the influence that new technologies have on the construction of public opinion and their ability both to mobilize people and produce real changes at social and political levels. The boom of the Internet and the emergence of social networks have served as a speaker to create visibility for a lot of social movements and spread their historical claims. These social movements find on the network the way to attract thousands, even millions, of people who share their goal. Global reach movements such as "Me too" and other local movements like "Arab spring" bring to light the empowerment of civil society against governments and institutions. In this context, mass media, which traditionally both monopolized the messages delivered to people and frequently manipulated them to serve their own interest, has now begun an adjustment process to a digital environment. This sometimes difficult process is drawing by all means a new scenery in which everybody, traditional mass media included, is struggling to find their own space. We are living an unprecedented, and in constant transformation, historical moment which is modifying to some extent the established power relationships between civil society and governments.
